Don't Go Back!
The king, moreover, must not acquire great numbers of horses for himself or make the people return to Egypt to get more of them, for the LORD has told you, "You are not to go back that way again." - Deuteronomy 17:16
When the Hebrew people were about to enter the Promised Land God gave them instructions concerning a king. One of the things to look for in a leader was a man who would not send his people back to Egypt in order to obtain horses for the fledging new nation. One of the greatest temptations we have as followers of Jesus is the temptation to go back to our old way of life. It can be quite appealing because we may have experienced comfort and pleasure in that old way of life even though we were in bondage to death and slavery. The Hebrew people had it tough in Egypt, yet the Scriptures tell us about their fond memories of eating “high on the hog” when they were in slavery. Perhaps another temptation would have been to sell their soul to the devil (Egypt) in order to boost their position and power as a new nation. What would be the harm in obtaining something good from the one who formerly harmed them? God says no. Compromise is a slippery slope that will eventually lead us back into slavery. Be encouraged brothers and sisters and don’t go back to Egypt because you will get burned every time.
