Follow the Spirit!
Wherever the spirit would go, they would go… - Ezekiel 1:20
The book of Ezekiel begins with a wild vision (apocalyptic) of a four-faced creature in the heavens that rolls on four wheels. The text says that “wherever the spirit would go” the creature would go. The spirit that was directing this wild looking object was the spirit of cherubim, angels. I don’t claim to understand it all and I am no expert on apocalyptic literature but the one thing that kept drawing me back to this text was the obedience of this bizarre creature to the leading and direction of the heavenly host.
If this creature followed the lead of the cherubim (spirit, with a little “s”) that closely then how much more are we to follow the lead of the Spirit? (The Holy Spirit, with a capital “S”; the third person of the Trinity) Paul says in Romans 8:14 that “those who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons and daughters of God” and he says in Ephesians 4:30 that we should not “quench the work of the Spirit” in our lives. He also says in Galatians 5:16 that we are to “walk by the Spirit.” If we are in Christ then the Father has sent us the Holy Spirit through Jesus and the Spirit has taken residence in our hearts so that He might guide us, comfort us, convict us, and lead us into all truth by drawing us to the Son who then takes us into the bliss of the Father. Our job as Christians is to listen to the Spirit’s voice in Holy Scripture and follow His lead so that we do not choke His work in our lives. Roll with the Spirit and be encouraged!
