God Speaks

Then the LORD answered Job out of the storm… -Job 38:1

After 37 chapters of silence God finally speaks. Up until that time the only thing Job heard was silence from God and the clamoring of his three friends, who tried to explain to him why he lost everything- his possessions, his family, and his health. Their words and reasons were killing Job. But now God speaks. What did God say? Did God tell him why all this happened? No. But God did speak and he reminded Job of His sovereign power over all of creation and ultimately this answer brought deep comfort to Job.

Sometimes we experience things in life that there are no pat answers for. We do not understand everything that happens to us this side of heaven. Some things remain a mystery and this is especially painful when it involves suffering, but for the Christian we must trust in the word that God gave to Job. God is sovereign and He is working out his good purposes in a sinful and broken world that affects us all, even people of faith.

This answer is not good enough for some (I understand that) but it sure beats the option of removing God from the equation. Without God suffering makes no sense and serves no purpose- we are all just victims of random chance. Even worse, suffering defeats us because if there is no God then there is no healing. At the end of the story Job was blessed- more livestock and more children- but even that is not guaranteed in this life. What is guaranteed is that “our Redeemer lives and that in the end He will stand upon the earth, and after our skin has been destroyed our flesh will see God.” (Job 19:25-26)
