Speaking Words of Encouragement
The sovereign LORD has given me an instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. –Isaiah 50:4
In the NT James teaches us about the power of the tongue. Like a rudder on a boat or a bit in the mouth of a horse, the tongue is small yet so powerful it can guide huge ships and tame wild horses. The challenge for the Christian is to harness the tongue for God’s glory and good in the world. No doubt, we are called to speak difficult, even negative words sometimes but on the whole God wants us to build others up with our words. In Isaiah the prophet says that “the LORD has given him an instructed tongue to know the word that sustains the weary.” Isn’t that beautiful? How do we get that instructed tongue so that we too can encourage others? We get it from God’s Word, the Bible. Fill yourself with Scripture, it will change your heart because God will be speaking his life into you; then you will be able to offer encouraging words to those who need encouragement.
